Layer 4a

You descend to an agoraphobic new layer of the Abyss, bounded only by the darkness where your light fails to reach. The distance threatens to pulverize your perception and make you feel infinitesimally small.

Row after row of unlit torches, in sconces driven directly into the hard earthen ground, divide the layer into a grid pattern. Every 25 feet, in any direction: another torch. You wander for ages among the pale torches of rotting wheat. Each torch seems exactly the same, save one: it boasts a small wire cage hanging from a hook.

Finally, you wander far enough afield for the torches to change. These bicolored torches are rooted in white chalk with black pebbles strewn about. The torches themselves are white along half their diameter and black along the other. Again, a wire cage hangs open from one of the torches.

You discover 10 of these regions, all marked by grids of torches. Each has exactly one wire cage. Each wide region has a particular torch or light source growing from the substrate like corn, repeated far into the distance. All are unlit and provide no relief in the gloom.

Aside from the pale torches and bicolored torches, you find:
-Bear pelt torches, with the hairy pelts providing the fuel
-Paper torches made of writing paper
-Floating torches in a region of rare pure water
-Clustered torches, five to a staff
-Jack-o-lanterns
-Gigantic furry carnivorous plants on torch poles – these don’t really look like they’ll light up…They turn to watch you walk near the boundary of their region. Fortunately the cage is right there on the boundary as well.

Beyond the carnivorous plant fields there are two more fields of torches that you cannot reach without passing the carnivorous torches:
-Glass suns on torch poles
-Vine-covered torches, drowned in long dead grapevines

You may interact with the torch itself or the cage for that specific type of torch.

Where all these regions converge there is a slimy pond. No fish ever break its scummy green surface. On a rotting boardwalk over the pond is the Descent Pore Array, which is sealed.

What do you do?

And I have found a brown gem.

I think I have some idea where this is heading. Though I don't yet see anything that would be particularly useful for us.

Be sure ta give I warnin' before you set off any torches. I've been growin' this beard for too long ta lose it in th' Abyss.

An' Athena gets ta roll twice!

I put it in th' cage for th' five-clustered torches an' holler "Stan' back!"

Every identical torch in the five-clustered torch region flares to life.

A chain.

I toss a brown gem into the slimy pond, a curious expression on my face.
